On Saturday the very popular Huns Vegan Chicken celebrated its 1 year anniversary by doing a kitchen takeover at Pomelo & Rocket in Leicester. I’ve been lucky to eat at Huns a couple times now so of course I could not miss out on the opportunity to celebrate this milestone with them.
I’m ashamed to admit that I have not yet been to Pomelo & Rocket, but it has been on my list of places to go for a while (I will get there one of these days!). For those not in the know, Pomelo is a fully vegan restaurant occupying a corner of Graffwerk on Frog Island. The location is a little difficult to find, but there’s something really appealing about the artsy, underground vibe.
On Saturday Huns took over the kitchen at Pomelo & Rocket from 12-9pm, with the bar open until 10pm. We stopped by around 5pm and there was a nice buzz, and a constant, steady stream of people coming and going for their vegan chicken fix. Huns is a delivery-only restaurant that also tours the country doing various events and festivals, serving up some delicious vegan fried chicken burgers and sides. Each of their fillets are individually handmade using seitan and coated in a secret blend of herbs and spices, and the result is pure magic.
On Saturday Andrew and I both opted for the same burger – the special. The burger had their signature chickhun patty with bachun, carmelised onion, cheeze, garlic mayo, and rocket.
I’ve had a few of their burgers now, so I’m a bit of a connoisseur, and this is hands down the best one I’ve tried. We also had a side of lovely, crispy fries and some chicken wings with a spicy sweet and sour sauce. The wings were impressive – they managed to get the seitan wrapped around what I think was a parsnip core (?) so you had the effect of it being on the bone. Sorcery. Pomelo & Rocket also kept their bar open, so we each had a beer to wash down all our yummy food.
In all the evening was fantastic and a great way to celebrate a year of serving up delicious burgers, and long may it continue. Now if they would only deliver to my side of town…. 😉
