Vegan article in the Leicester Mercury

February 3, 2015

As some of you may know, the Leicester Mercury published an article about me in Saturday’s paper discussing my blog, veganism and food, which I am incredibly honored by.

One unfortunate part of the article was the headline, as it makes me sound a bit flippant about the health benefits of a plant-based diet, which I am anything but. While it is true that my personal reason now for being vegan is for animal welfare, it wasn’t always that way. Initially I did it because of the mounting evidence that a plant-based diet is the best way to prevent a myriad of diseases and illnesses. But the more I started to explore veganism, the more important the animal welfare aspect of it became. I really do believe it is the healthiest way to live, and would never belittle anyone whose main reason for being vegan is for their health. I know there is a perception by some that there are better reasons than others for being vegan, but in reality the end result is the same regardless of your convictions, so we should support each other no matter what.

That being said, I’m really happy with the article itself. In it I talk about my background, the inspiration for the blog and how easy it is to cook plant-based meals. And in fact, the online version has a different title which I am very happy with, and I didn’t even have to request the change.

I’m really happy to be part of a growing community of people who are spreading the word about veganism, and I hope we continue to hear more and more about it in mainstream publications in the future.
